Phone charging access in Tanzanian remote areas

Through its “Energy Access” program, Enea completed a pro-bono project in Tanzania for the NGO Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) International. The purpose of the project was to analyse the solar phone charging value chain in Tanzania and make recommendations to foster phone charging entrepreneurship in remote areas.
To contribute to the expansion of micro phone charging businesses while maximising the positive impacts of such activity on BoP entrepreneurs, GVEP International is seeking to establish the value chain required to support such a market with affordable and efficient phone products. GVEP commissioned Enea Consulting to examine the opportunities and risks for each business in the value chain in order to better position and focus the NGO’s resources and support.
In the rural region of the Lake Victoria in Tanzania, almost half of the phone owners must travel between 4 and 18 km to charge their phone due to lack of energy access. If we consider that more than 90% of phones used are related to business or to money transfers, then a broader access to mobile charging services would represent a key value creation lever at the local level.
